Due to its antimicrobial and durable properties, copper makes a great surface for use in the kitchen. It can take a splattering of oil and withstand exposure to heat, so it can even be used above the hob. Lucy Bathurst of Nest Design has used copper sheeting to create her splashback (pictured). In much the same way as the antique French copper pots and pans that inspired her, a copper splashback will stand the test of time. To maintain it, just wipe with soapy water and buff. ‘It’s like polishing an old pair of leather shoes,’ says Bathurst. ‘It comes up shiny every time.’.
